Frequently asked questions and answers

What can be the causes of tooth pain?

Tooth pain can have several causes, including tooth decay, a cracked or damaged tooth, gum disease, a dental abscess, a loose or damaged filling, or sensitivity to hot and cold foods. Wisdom tooth problems and teeth grinding can also cause discomfort. The cause depends on the location, severity and duration of the pain. A dental examination can help identify the problem and determine the appropriate treatment.

To help manage tooth pain temporarily, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water, avoid foods and drinks that trigger sensitivity, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there is swelling. You may consider an over-the-counter pain reliever if it is safe for you, following the package directions or advice from a pharmacist. These steps may provide temporary relief but will not fix the underlying cause. Contact your dentist promptly, especially if the pain is severe or persistent.

Sudden toothache with jaw pain may be caused by a cracked tooth, dental infection, inflammation around a tooth, or teeth grinding. Contact a dentist promptly for an assessment. If jaw pain occurs with chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea or pain spreading to your arm or back, seek emergency medical care immediately, as these can be signs of a heart attack. Significant facial swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing also requires urgent assessment.

Many dental procedures can be performed comfortably with appropriate local anaesthesia. You may experience some pressure during treatment or temporary sensitivity afterward, depending on the procedure. Tell your dentist about any anxiety or discomfort so they can discuss ways to help you feel more comfortable.

Dental treatment costs depend on the type of procedure, the complexity of your dental needs and the treatment required. Contact AIMS Dentistry on Garrison for information about fees for specific services. You can also ask about your insurance coverage and whether you may be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).

You should seek urgent dental care for severe or persistent tooth pain, a broken tooth, a knocked-out permanent tooth, significant swelling or a suspected dental abscess. Contact a dentist as soon as possible for guidance. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
